The HTC Droid Eris is the second Android phone for Verizon Wireless following the Motorola Droid. This phone is also the most affordable Android phone on the market right now and given the long list of features, there is no doubt that you get great bang for the buck. I am quite shocked that a phone like this can be had for under $80 with a 2-year contract. Unlike the other Droid, this Droid has a 3.2″ full touch screen with no physical keyboard (however, the virtual keyboard is not the stock Android keyboard. It is HTC’s own keyboard, and as a result, the letters are bigger, a little bit more spaced out and on a white background. This makes it much easier to see and use. To the point where the need for an actual QWERTY keyboard is not at all needed). It does boast a 5.0MP camera, with a camcorder, a 528MHz processor, 288MB ram, 512MB rom (with an SD card slot which can be used for storing pictures/videos/music), great call quality, personal and corporate e-mail support (including excellent Gmail support), voice commands (including usage on the Google search, Gmail, Google calender). This is also one of the first phones to utilize the very good HTC Sense (also found on the HTC Incredible). Sense is a UI (or user interface) which gives you seven home screens (as opposed to the 3-5, depending on version, offered by the stock Android), HTC scenes (which gives you themes that can be customized to suit your personality or lifestyle) and also HTC widgets on top of Android widgets (these widgets include twitter and the geotagging widget, footprints). This phone also offers Flash Lite which can make your web browsing experience smooth until the launch of Adobe Flash for Android, which should be coming in the second half of this year. As well as better Microsoft Exchange support using HTC’s very good interface, making this a better option for business users than a phone using the stock Android ROM like the Nexus One. While this phone does come with Android 1.5, an update to 2.1 has been announced and should be available very soon.
